About the Program · Program Assessment
The success of the Beeson Scholars program in the past ten years has been the
identification and cultivation of outstanding individuals who are poised to make
significant contributions in their careers to the advancement of aging research
and teaching of geriatrics. The program has proven that talented physicians and
scientists can be drawn into academic geriatrics in sufficient numbers by providing
protected time for research and relief from administrative and clinical duties;
financial support and flexibility of that support; networking and opportunity
to interact with peers, mentors, leaders in aging, aging researchers from different
disciplines and NIH staff; and mentoring.
- The Beeson program is identified with individuals who are highly competitive
and strongly committed to excellence in geriatrics and aging research. There
is mounting evidence that individual Beeson scholars are emerging as recognized
leaders in their fields. Witness some results from a recent survey of Beeson
Scholars:
- 57% of the Scholars said they had received a promotion, including promotions
to full professors and endowed chairs.
- Lab space for 50% of Scholars has increased. This reflects an average across
all cohorts, which grows to 80% as you get to the 1995 cohort. 94% of all
Scholars have added personnel to their research teams, and 96% are training
medical students, graduate students, post-docs and others.
- 75% of Scholars have received subsequent extramural funding - including
significant grants from the National Institutes of Health and other federal
support, as well as significant foundation and private support.
- An analysis conducted by the National Institute on Aging indicates that
82% of Beeson alumni (1994 through 1999 cohorts) received R01 support.
Better training of doctors, nurses and other health professionals may be the
most effective means of ensuring the best care for older Americans in the years
to come. The Beeson Program is making a notable contribution towards that goal.
