| Sascha Dublin, MD, PhD Assistant Investigator Group Health Center for Health Studies
Dr. Sascha Dublin is assistant investigator at the Center for Health Studies within Group Health, an integrated health care delivery system in Seattle, Washington. Her research is broadly focused on medication safety in the elderly, a growing area of concern related to the fact that older adults consume the most medications and are particularly vulnerable to adverse effects. Dr. Dublin’s Beeson project examines possible relationships between medications and pneumonia risk in the elderly. Specifically, she is investigating whether acid-suppressing medications, including proton pump inhibitors and histamine-2-receptor blockers, may increase pneumonia risk, while statins and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors may decrease risk. This research will also examine a key methodological issue: the importance of considering functional and cognitive status in studies of drug effects in the elderly. The long-term goal of Dr. Dublin’s research is to develop more effective approaches to studying medication effects in older adults and to provide important information about medications and risk of community-acquired pneumonia, a common and serious problem in this population. Dr. Dublin received her MD and PhD (in epidemiology) from the University of Washington. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, and a post-doctoral fellowship at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle. | |
