Dr. Wes Ely is a subspecialist in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine with a special interest in Geriatrics, who conducts patient-oriented, health services research. He is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and an outcomes researcher with the Vanderbilt Center for Health Services Research. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Tulane University in 1985. In 1989, Dr. Ely graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine and received dual degrees including his M.D. and Masters in Public Health, and is in Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He trained at Wake
Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC (where he was mentored by Dr. William Hazzard, M.D.) and Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Ely's research has focused on improving the care and outcomes of critically ill patients with sepsis and respiratory failure, with special emphasis on the problems facing older patients in the ICU (e.g., weaning from mechanical ventilation, cognitive impairment in the ICU, neuropsychological deficits post ICU care, and quality of death in the ICU). Dr Ely has made numerous national and international presentations, is currently participating in several multicenter clinical trials in sepsis and ARDS, and has written or co-authored more than 90 articles, book chapters and editorials. He participated in the Hartford Foundation's Geriatric Educational Retreat (GER) in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and recently authored the chapter on Pulmonary and Critical Care Problems in Older Persons for the 5th edition of the Geriatric Review Syllabus.
