Since 1995, the Paul B. Beeson Career Development Awards in Aging Research Program (formerly the Beeson Physician Faculty Scholars Program) has supported 139 Beeson Scholars from 39 of the nation's top medical schools and research institutions. Today, the Beeson program continues to foster the independent research careers of clinically trained investigators — a growing cadre of talented physician-scientists — whose research and leadership are enhancing the health and quality of life of Americans, particularly older people. The program is named after Dr. Paul B. Beeson who passed away on August 14, 2006. To learn about Dr. Beeson, click here.

The 2009 Beeson RFA is now available!
It can be found here. Please note that the application deadline is November 3, 2008.

The Beeson Annual Meeting is held for Scholars, mentors and other leaders in academic medicine and aging research to review research progress of Scholars, encourage dissemination of their findings, and enhance development of scholarship and leadership. The 2009 annual meeting was held June 19 - 22 at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa at the Santa Ana Pueblo Reservation in New Mexico. The 2009 location has not yet been confirmed.

AFAR and the Hartford Foundation Award Collaborative Research Grants to Multi-Center Research Teams:
New Program Advances Scientific Collaborations in Aging Research

Five research teams of Beeson alumni were awarded $400,000 each to collaborate on translational and multi-disciplinary research on aging as the first recipients of the Hartford/AFAR Collaborative Research Awards, an extension of the Paul B. Beeson Career Development Scholars Program. Expanding on the successful Beeson program, which supports physician-scientists engaged in geriatric medicine and aging research, the Hartford/AFAR Collaborative Award supports Beeson Scholars who already have a proven track record in aging research, by fostering collaborations with their Beeson colleagues. To read about the recipients and the work they're conducting, click here.

In October, the American Federation for Aging Research hosted a conference on the biomarkers of aging. You can view the program here and read all about it here.

Beeson Extension to Ireland: The Atlantic Philanthropies and the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) are pleased to announce The 2007 Paul Beeson Career Development Awards in Aging Research Program - Extension to the Island of Ireland. Hartford Foundation Action Briefs Make the Case
The John A. Hartford Foundation has developed a compendium for improving geriatrics training and care for older adults in the form of action briefs. These briefs offer models and practical details about cost-effective program implementation. The Beeson Program action brief "Nurturing Leaders in Geriatrics Research: Creating a Pathway to Needed Medical Discoveries and Treatments" can be found here.
